The March 2025 Worm Moon: A Time of Spiritual Reflection and Transition

The night sky will be illuminated by a spectacular celestial event on Friday, March 14, 2025, as we witness the full Worm Moon. This full moon carries special significance, not only for its seasonal timing during Lent but also because it will be a total lunar eclipse—a rare and breathtaking “blood moon.”

The Worm Moon: Nature’s Awakening

March’s full moon has traditionally been called the “Worm Moon,” a name that speaks to the natural rhythms of the earth awakening after winter’s slumber. As the snow begins to melt and the ground softens, worms emerge from their winter sleep, signaling the arrival of spring. This reminds us that even after the coldest, darkest periods, life stirs beneath the surface, ready to emerge anew.

Indigenous and Celtic traditions have given this moon several other names that reflect similar themes of transition:

  • Crow Moon
  • Snow Crust Moon
  • Plough Moon
  • Chaste Moon
  • Sap Moon

Each name captures an aspect of this pivotal time when winter begins to release its grip and the first signs of spring appear.

The Lenten Moon: A Time of Spiritual Reflection

As a Catholic, this particular full moon holds even deeper meaning for me. The March 2025 full moon falls during the Christian season of Lent, making it the “Lenten Moon.” Following the celebrations of Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday (when my daughter, son and I bake our traditional King Cake), Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day spiritual journey.

Lent invites us into a period of introspection, fasting, and deeper connection with God. Just as the worms emerge from the earth, Lent encourages us to emerge from spiritual hibernation, examining our relationship with the divine and recommitting ourselves to our faith journey. During Lent I use this time to detox, shamanic journeying and ancestral working.

This is also a Rare Blood Moon Eclipse

What makes this year’s Worm Moon particularly special is that it will be a total lunar eclipse—often called a “blood moon.” Google AI states that “During this celestial alignment, Earth positions itself directly between the sun and moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. The sunlight that does reach the moon is filtered through Earth’s atmosphere, giving the moon its characteristic reddish glow. This dramatic transformation of our familiar moon into a crimson orb has captivated humans throughout history, often inspiring both awe and spiritual reflection. The eclipse serves as a powerful reminder of the cosmic dance of our celestial neighbors and our place within this grand celestial choreography.” I love that wording and imagery of “cosmic dance” – for life really is a dance- an ebb and flow of emotions and action interweaving to create our reality.

Astrological Significance: Between Pisces and Virgo

This March full moon arrives during a time of significant astrological transition. The sun currently is in Pisces—the 12th house of the zodiac—representing completions and the ending of cycles. Pisces brings with it an energy of mystery, depth, and intuitive understanding.

Meanwhile, the full moon itself will be under the influence of Virgo, creating an interesting contrast. While Pisces (water) encourages spiritual connection and emotional fluidity, Virgo (earth) brings practical discernment and analytical clarity. This opposition may indeed leave us feeling pulled in different directions—between our practical concerns and our emotional and spiritual needs. What we want to do and who we want to be…what we have done and who we are becoming… what we wanted vs what we desire…

This period arrives just before the spring equinox and the beginning of Aries season, which marks the astrological new year. We stand at a cosmic threshold between endings and beginnings, making it an ideal time to honor what needs to be released while preparing for new growth.

Use this time of Pisces, Lent and Full Moon to connect into your own oppositions- what are you afraid of? what needs to be completed for you to take your next steps? How can you connect more deeply with your spiritual self and guides?

As the blood-red moon illuminates the night sky on March 14, we’re reminded of the eternal cycles of nature, the cosmic dance of celestial bodies, and our own spiritual journeys. Whether viewed through the lens of astronomy, traditional folklore, religious observance, or astrological significance, this Worm Moon invites us to pause in wonder and reflection.

In the words often attributed to various spiritual traditions: As above, so below. The cycles we witness in the heavens mirror the cycles within our own lives and spirits. This March full moon offers us a perfect moment to honor these connections and embrace both endings and new beginnings.
