A Journey of letting go; closets & clothes & trauma healing

Bathroom Closet Clean-Up Challenge: Life-Changing Tips & Tricks

Continuing our organization challenge, let’s take a deep breath. Clothes, closets, and under the bed are like lurking trauma monsters waiting to trigger us into shut down.

Sort Using the 4-Box Method

As you remove items, sort them into four categories:

  • Keep (items you use regularly)
  • Store elsewhere (items that belong in another area)
  • Donate/Sell (items in good condition you no longer need
  • Trash

A Journey of Letting Go: Closets, Clothes & Trauma Healing

When we talk about cleaning out our closets, we’re often doing more than just organizing physical space. For many of us, the process of sorting through accumulated items becomes a profound metaphor for emotional healing and personal growth.

The Weight of What We Keep

Just as our closets become filled with half-empty bottles, expired medications, and products we thought would change our lives, our hearts and minds can become cluttered with emotional baggage. Each item we struggle to discard may represent:

  • Memories we’re not ready to process
  • Money spent that we feel guilty about wasting
  • Aspirational versions of ourselves that never materialized
  • Gifts from people whose opinions we valued, even if the items don’t serve us

Creating Space for Healing

When we begin to sort through our belongings with intention, we create opportunity for emotional release:

  • Discarding expired products parallels letting go of outdated beliefs about ourselves
  • Organizing essentials reflects prioritizing what truly matters in our lives
  • Donating unused items allows others to benefit while we practice detachment
  • Empty space creates room for new possibilities and growth

The Body Keeps the Score

Our relationship with our physical spaces often mirrors our relationship with trauma. Research shows that trauma lives in our bodies, affecting how we move through the world. Similarly, our closets can become repositories of our past struggles:

  • The skincare & makeup regimen bought during a period of low self-esteem
  • Products accumulated during times of anxiety or depression or different weights & phases of life – often wanting to trigger your low self worth
  • Items we hold onto “just in case,” reflecting a scarcity mindset born from difficult experiences

Small Steps Toward Freedom

Begin your journey gently:

  1. Start with just 15 minutes of sorting if the process feels overwhelming
  2. Hold each item and honestly ask: “Does this still serve me?” A la “Joy”
  3. Acknowledge the emotions that arise without judgment
  4. Celebrate small victories in creating more functional space
  5. Notice how physical decluttering affects your mental clarity

Remember that healing isn’t linear. Some days you may feel ready to let go of many things, while other days a single item might trigger unexpected emotions. This process is as much about self-compassion as it is about organization.

By approaching your bathroom closet clean-up as a healing practice rather than just a chore, you transform a mundane task into an opportunity for profound personal growth. Each item you release creates space not just in your home, but in your heart. Start small. Take your time. Breathe!!!
